What is Marmite Made Of?

Many of us are familiar with the look, taste and smell of Marmite, but do you know what gives it that distinctive flavour profile? Concentrated yeast extract.

The yeast extract that is used to make Marmite is a by-product of the beer-brewing process, and it was invented by accident. Nowadays, Marmite is primarily made up of yeast extract, but it also contains salt, vegetable extract, celery extract and a combination of vitamins and minerals to give it that recognisable flavour.

Is Marmite High in Salt?

The Original Marmite formula contains 0.86g of salt per 8g serving. This helps to give it that unique savoury flavour, however, it presents problems for those who need to stick to a low-sodium diet. As a result, the company introduced low-salt Marmite to help those with more complicated nutritional needs.
